Twitter Inc stated on Monday it will introduce a new function to let customers charge admission to their live audio chat rooms in its “Spaces” function, as the social media organization seeks to court more content creators.
Until now, only some customers who have been component of Twitter’s pilot testing have been capable to host their personal Space. Starting on Monday, any user with at least 600 followers can be a host, the organization added.
Twitter introduced Spaces last year to compete with viral app Clubhouse, which jump-began the audio chat trend and attracted celebrities and entrepreneurs, but remains restricted as an invite-only app.
Over the coming months, Twitter stated a restricted group of customers will be capable to sell tickets to access their Spaces conversations, and will identify their personal pricing and how several tickets to make readily available. Hosts will retain the majority of the income, though Twitter will earn a “small amount,” the organization added.
The move is component of Twitter’s work to be a larger player in the “creator economy,” as influencers and independent writers are increasingly earning cash from their content on platforms like YouTube or Substack.
Facebook last month announced its personal plans for audio chat attributes, and also stated it would enable listeners to tip hosts.
