Taipei:
Taiwan accused China on Tuesday of “maliciously” blocking its access to the World Health Organization (WHO) and placing politics above people’s well-being, soon after Beijing signalled it would not permit the island to attend a significant WHO meeting.
The United States and the wealthy-nation Group of Seven (G7) have known as for Chinese-claimed but democratically ruled Taiwan to attend the WHO’s choice-generating body, the World Health Assembly, which meets from May 24.
China’s foreign ministry stated on Monday the island had to accept it was aspect of China if it wanted access to international bodies, anything Taipei’s government will not do, and that “appropriate arrangements” have been made for Taiwan’s participation in international overall health matters.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Joanne Ou, stated China was lying and searching for to mislead the international neighborhood.
“China’s malicious obstruction is the main obstacle to the WHO’s failure to fully include Taiwan in technical discussions,” she stated.
“It also shows China’s continued tyrannical act of putting politics above health and human rights.”
Only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent its persons in the WHO and other bodies, not China, she stated.
Taiwan is locked out of most international organisations such as the WHO due to the objections of China, which considers the island one of its provinces not a nation.
While the WHO cooperates with Taiwan’s technical authorities on COVID-19, it is up to member states no matter if to invite Taiwan to observe the WHO meeting, the WHO’s principal legal officer Steve Solomon stated on Monday.
Such an invitation would require a vote, and China can conveniently corral sufficient nations to block it, according to diplomats.
