Manila, Philippines:
The Philippines has sacked its former ambassador to Brazil, just after she was caught on camera attacking a domestic worker at her official residence in Brasilia.
Marichu Mauro was recalled to Manila late final year just after Brazil’s GloboNews channel broadcast safety camera footage filmed more than eight months displaying her repeatedly assaulting a member of her household employees.
The profession diplomat has now been dismissed from the foreign service, President Rodrigo Duterte told a tv audience on Monday.
“There are rules to be followed. If you disobey, you take the risk. If something goes wrong, it’s gonna hit you,” Duterte mentioned.
Mauro’s firing implies she will shed her pension. She is also barred from standing for public workplace.
According to GloboNews, the Filipino worker was employed at the ambassador’s official residence, a massive gated compound in Brazil’s capital.
Footage of the abuse — dated involving March and October 2020 — was made use of as proof in a complaint lodged with the Philippine government against Mauro, it mentioned.
Mauro was posted to Brazil in 2018, from exactly where she oversaw the missions to Colombia, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela.
Mauro has not responded to AFP’s request for comment on her dismissal.
Millions of Filipinos escape low wages, unemployment and restricted possibilities at property by going overseas, like as to come to be domestic workers. Their remittances are crucial to the neighborhood economy.
But a lot of of these workers face complicated or risky situations, and reports of physical or psychological abuse are not uncommon, even though most situations involve foreign employers.
