Lagos:
A Nigerian police inspector has killed 5 civilians and injured 4 in a shooting rampage, police stated Monday, in the most up-to-date violence in the country’s restive southeast.
The incident occurred on Sunday when the inspector stormed a residential estate in Enugu and opened fire on men and women there, state police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe stated in a statement.
The victims have been taken to hospital for therapy.
Ndukwe stated 5 men and women, “whose injuries were critical, have been confirmed dead by doctors on duty and deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.”
The inspector was arrested and an investigation was launched, he stated. The motivation for the attack was not but identified.
Southeast Nigeria has seen a surge in attacks on safety operatives in current months, leaving scores dead, which includes police officers.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in search of a breakaway republic for ethnic Igbo men and women from the area, has denied allegations of duty for the attacks.
A unilateral declaration of independence for Biafra in 1967 led to a 30-month civil war that claimed the lives of more than one million Igbo men and women prior to federal forces crushed the rebellion.
