What got you interested in the project?
Gazal: I identified each the leads very distinctive. The guy is a correct romantic and wears his heart on a sleeve. The girl is an ambitious go-getter. Traditional male and female roles have been reversed in the book, which was genuinely thrilling for me. I also felt this genre has been missing in our OTT space and it would be a terrific chance to do anything like this in the Indian setting.
Since the characters in the book are 1st-generation Indian-Americans, diaspora was a main theme. How did you work about it?
Sunayana: We knew altering the setting would imply losing out on some issues. To retain the nuances of desi Americans, we introduced the character of Harsh. We wanted to make confident that the essence of the characters from the book remained when we changed their experiences because they grew up in India. For instance, Dimple’s conflict with her mom in the show is extremely comparable to that in the book for the reason that there are some issues you can not escape as an Indian girl.
What was the explanation behind obtaining every single character narrate a single episode?
Gazal: We ended up obtaining a lot of characters with their personal distinctive backstories and conflicts. They became as vital as the leads to us. They had such diverse voices that it would have been a loss if persons didn’t get to hear them.
Aarsh: We decided along the way that we wanted to go for an ensemble show rather than just a enjoy story.
The show ends on a cliffhanger. Will there be a season 2?
Gazal: We have been normally hoping for a second season when writing the show. Fortunately, Netflix had sufficient self-assurance in the show that they decided to go with a cliffhanger. There are a lot of positive responses so we are maintaining our fingers crossed.
