Addressing an awareness webinar more than growing situations of cancer on Tuesday evening, Dr Acharya stated information of prevalence of cancers in females suggests that 26.3 per cent are due to breast cancer, 18.3 per cent due to cervix uterus cancer, 6.7 per cent due to ovary although lip oral cavity cancer constitutes 4.6 per cent of cancer deaths in females. Till a handful of years ago, cancer of cervix was most prevalent amongst Indian females.
International Agency for Research on Cancer estimated that a single in 5 males and a single in six females worldwide will create cancer more than the course of their lifetime, and that a single in eight males and a single in 11 females will die from their illness.
He stressed on controlling tobacco consumption, which is the major, most preventable result in of oral cancers along with 13 other forms of cancers. He stated even though smoking has gone down by 6 per cent in India, consumption of smokeless tobacco/chewing tobacco is nonetheless higher.
