Manila:
Four crew members from a cargo ship that ran aground off the southern Philippines have died, though seven have been rescued and a search is continuing for nine other folks, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) stated on Wednesday.
The crew of LCT Cebu Great Ocean abandoned the vessel, which was carrying nickel ore and 2,000 litres of diesel, ahead of it ran aground in Surigao del Norte province on Monday, the coast guard stated.
The bodies of the 4 crew members had been discovered soon after getting washed onto the shore, though the seven had been rescued in many components of the southern province soon after reaching land, Gelly Rosales, a coast guard official, told Reuters.
Rosales stated the cargo vessel was taking shelter from rough seas off a further province when its anchor reportedly broke causing it to drift till it ran aground.
The climate had been rough in the region due to Typhoon Surigae, which brought winds that reached 195 km (121.17 miles) per hour, with its effects felt in numerous components of the eastern Philippines.
Disaster officials reported on Wednesday that 3 individuals had died and 10 had been injured and one missing, in communities hit by robust winds, though tens of thousands remained in evacuation centres.
The Philippines sees about 20 tropical storms annually.
