New Delhi:
Group-IB, a international threat hunting and adversary-centric cyber intelligence corporation, has detected a substantial-scale scam campaign targeting Facebook Messenger customers all more than the world.
Group-IB Digital Risk Protection (DRP) analysts have discovered proof proving that customers in more than 80 nations in Europe, Asia, the MEA area, North and South America may have been impacted, the corporation mentioned in a release. “By distributing ads promoting an allegedly updated version of Facebook Messenger, cybercriminals harvested users’ login credentials,” the corporation mentioned.
The cyber intelligence corporation has found about 1,000 fake Facebook accounts distributing hyperlinks to an allegedly updated version of Facebook Messenger. Users who followed the hyperlink would then be redirected to a fake Facebook Messenger web site with a login type, via which cyber criminals harvested users’ credentials.
According to the intelligence corporation, scammers utilised official Facebook logos and shortened hyperlink names that resembled the true ones. Group-IB mentioned that the social media giant itself has nothing at all to do with the scheme.
The scale of the scam has grown substantially more than the previous numerous months, the corporation noted. As of April, investigative group discovered 5,600 Facebook posts inviting customers to set up the fake “latest Messenger update,” Sputnik reported.
