Pandemic lockdowns and travel restrictions triggered dramatic but brief-lived improvements in air high quality and drops in pollution, the UN mentioned on Friday, but warned the blip was no substitute for extended-term action.
A new report from the UN’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) identified that Covid-19 restrictions last year temporarily enhanced air high quality in a quantity of locations, in particular in urban regions.
But they also spurred an improve in some pollutants that have been each hazardous to wellness and had an unclear influence on climate transform.
“Covid-19 proved to be an unplanned air-quality experiment,” WMO chief Petteri Taalas mentioned in a statement.
“It did lead to temporary localised improvements,” he mentioned.
