British officials could declare one of the new coronavirus strains initially discovered in India a “variant of concern”, the BBC and Guardian reported on Friday, due to proof that it spreads more rapidly than the original version of the virus.
Scientists and physicians have suggested that one version of the variant initially discovered in India, recognized as B.1.617.2, is designated a “variant of concern”, as it seems to have been spreading more rapidly in the United Kingdom than other variants, the BBC stated.
The original India variant, B.1.617, was initially detected in October, but Public Health England (PHE) has categorised 3 distinctive subtypes, all with slightly distinctive mutations.
While B.1.617.2 appears to be as transmissible as the Kent variant which fuelled substantially of Britain’s second COVID-19 wave, there is no proof it is resistant to present vaccines, the BBC stated, citing a supply.
Other variants of concern involve variants initially identified in Kent, south-east England, as nicely as South Africa and Brazil.
